Erie's French Street Firehouse
The Pufferbelly on French Street is a fine dining restaurant that feels like a neighborhood eatery. It’s convivial, distinctive and utterly free of pretension, thanks to Bruce & Mary Ellen Hemme who own and operate The Pufferbelly. Dining here feels like dining at home – that is if your home has 25-foot ceilings and a brass firepole. The menu, too, is designed to be both familiar and imaginative. If you want comfort food come in on Thursday for the Homemade Chicken Dumpling Soup, or for the more adventurous palate, the Bleu Cheese-Stuffed Portabella Mushroom appetizer with red onion & tomatoes comes highly recommended. Larger appetites are rewarded with the Southwestern Rubbed Strip Steak or the Broiled Honey Dijon Glazed Pork Chops. Dessert is always an event, so save room for their signature Peanut Butter Pie. The spacious bar recalls the glory days of firefighting, with its original drink menu and friendly service. Most of all, dining at The Pufferbelly makes you feel like a regular, which is just what you’ll want to become.
